Recreational Sites

Southern Water operates in a beautiful region of Tasmania. We recognise that we can make a significant contribution to the local community by providing access to our land for formal and informal recreation.

The areas around a number of our large reservoirs are very popular recreational sites. These offer facilities such as walking tracks, BBQs, picnic huts, playgrounds and fishing.

Our Drinking Water Catchments

Southern Water drinking water is sourced from 50 catchment areas covering an area of approximately 18% of Tasmania. Reticulation systems then pipe water throughout populated areas. More than 43,000 ML (megalitres) of drinking water is supplied to Southern Water customers annually.

In greater Hobart, water systems have their beginnings in three catchments:

The Derwent River

This is our largest catchment, measuring approximately 6,500 sq km and providing 60% of greater Hobart’s drinking water. This can provide the majority of greater Hobart’s drinking water requirements in times of low rainfall.

Lake Fenton/Lady Barron Creek

This catchment covers an area of approximately 1,530 hectares, accounting for around 20% of water supplied to greater Hobart. This is situated in Mt Field National Park and is also Southern Water’s largest water storage at 4500ML.

Wellington Park

These catchments cover an area of approximately 2,618 hectares, spanning Mount Wellington. The high quality water from this catchment accounts for about 20% of water supplied to Greater Hobart. The catchment, in terms of water harvesting, is split in half.

The southern part of the catchment is known as Hobart Mountain catchment and covers 1,800 hectares of land located in the Wellington Park recreational area. The northern half of the catchment covers 1,600 hectares with its origins in Wellington Park and is known as the Glenorchy mountain catchment.
