Salamanca Place sewerage upgrade

Over the past decade ageing infrastructure has caused ongoing issues for residents and businesses within the Salamanca precinct. These include odour, sewer blockages and poor reliability associated with infrastructure which is over 100 years old.

Southern Water began upgrading the Salamanca Sewerage system in November 2009 by replacing existing valves, pumps, pipe works and electrical systems in the existing pump station. This upgrade addressed OH&S and reliability issues within the pump station.

Overflow work

In October 2011 Southern Water completed work on another stage of the Salamanca Sewerage upgrade project.

The replacement and upgrade of 30 metres of pipe addressed the issue of sewerage overflowing onto the footpath which occurred numerous times at the eastern end of Salamanca Place during periods of prolonged heavy rainfall.

New pump station

It has been identified that a new pump station needs to be installed to replace the current pump station which has been in operation since 1904. Initially construction for this stage was planned to begin in July 2011. However, through our community consultation with residents and business owners in the area it was discovered that the planned location would severely inconvenience several hospitality businesses in the area.

An alternative location for the pump station has been identified at the silos end of Salamanca Lawns, which will not only reduce the impact on the local businesses but also reduce the likely construction period. Work is now scheduled to commence in the first half of 2012.
