Lenah Valley Water Supply Project

Prior to the water and sewerage reforms, Hobart City Council (in conjunction with Hobart Water), initiated a water supply augmentation project in order to improve water supply capacity and alleviate pressure issues in the Hobart suburb of Lenah Valley.

The Lenah Valley area is currently serviced by reservoirs supplied by the Lake Fenton Pipeline. Issues identified with the existing system include:
• Pressure fluctuations in upper areas - Customers up to 200metres above supply currently do not meet requirements of the Southern Water Urban Water Pressure Supply Policy.
• During periods of high demand, water supplies to customers in these areas is also affected;
• The existing water supply system does not accommodate future growth in the area;
• Outdated and aging infrastructure provides an unsafe working environment for operators.

What is the project?

To overcome these issues, Southern Water is implementing a project which will extend the Pottery Road water supply zone for new properties and adequately service existing customers. To achieve this, pipeworks and zones in Lenah Valley will be changed and the following infrastructure implemented:
• A new 4.5ML reservoir in the top end of Pottery Road including inlet/outlet and scour pipelines;
• An access road to the new reservoir site and associated pipe work;
• Construction of a drainage pipe through Cascade land down to the rivulet

This project is a crucial part of our plan to ensure we can meet existing and future demand for water supply within Greater Hobart.
