Ellendale water treatment system upgrade

This project is currently underway, with the main objective being the removal of a permanent boil water alert and improved water quality for Ellendale residents.

Project summary

The Ellendale water treatment plant supplies water to the township of Ellendale located within the Central Highlands Council. Due to inadequacies with this system, the township of Ellendale is currently subject to a permanent boil water notice.

In April 2008 the Central Highlands Council engaged Hobart Water to investigate the Ellendale drinking water plant and in June 2008, Hobart Water produced an investigation report and subsequent update report in October 2008. This has now transferred to Southern Water.

Southern Water is upgrading existing and install new infrastructure to ensure the successful operation of the Ellendale water treatment plant. This improved treatment system will produce reliable drinking water in accordance with the requirements of the Public Health Act. Improved water quality will enable the removal of the boil water notice for this supply.

The system upgrade will include installing a new filter membrane, upgrading the water treatment control system, exploring options for additional monitoring and control systems and telemetry, installing new pipework for 3 new concrete storage tanks, general improvements and producing a monitoring regime and documentation to enable the removal of the boil water notice for the Ellendale water scheme.
