Invitation for Public comment: Southern Water Customer Charter
Our Customer Charter
At Southern Water, we are currently developing our first Customer Charter. This document sets out the standards of service we will provide to our customers and how these will be met.
As a newly-created business, we have not yet had time to establish a baseline of performance against service standard categories. However, over time we are required to meet minimum service standards as set down in the Tasmanian Water and Sewerage Industry Customer Service Code. These standards are based on those adopted by similar businesses operating elsewhere in Australia.
The aim of our Customer Charter is simple - to document and explain how we conduct business with our customers, and outline processes and responsibilities.
The charter will explain your rights and responsibilities as a customer and our commitments to you in providing safe and reliable water, sewerage and trade waste services.
Your feedback
As part of our consultation process, Southern Water is inviting public comment on our Customer Charter. We would greatly value your involvement in assessing and providing feedback on our first draft.
The final document will be submitted to the independent Tasmanian Economic Regulator for approval before implementation. Your input will help us to ensure that the document is a true reflection of the needs and expectations of our customers.
Copies of the draft can be downloaded as a pdf here (please note, this is a lengthy document and at 1MB a reasonably large file).

Catchment water quality issues
Recent media coverage of water quality issues on Tasmania's East Coast relating to possible toxins in the water supply at St Helens, has raised some important issues for the water industry and the community generally.
The drinking water supplied by Southern Water is fully treated and regularly tested. Southern Water works closely with the Department of Health and Human Services in ensuring the water supplied to our customers is in accordance with the Tasmanian Drinking Water Guidelines.
For further information on investigations into this water quality issue visit the Department of Healh and Human Services website at www.dhhs.tas.gov.au.
