Huon Valley Regional Water Scheme Launched
The Federal Member for Franklin, Julie Collins MP, officially launched Southern Water’s Huon Valley Regional Water Scheme.
Southern Water’s CEO, Mr Mike Paine, said the $30 million dollar scheme would ensure water quality in the population centres of the Huon Valley consistently met Australian Drinking Water Guidelines as well as enrich environmental biodiversity in by returning water to stressed catchment areas.

Federal Government Funding Boosts Metering Project

Chairman of Tasmania’s Regional Water Corporations Geoff Willis has welcomed the announcement of $10 million of Federal Government funding to aid the roll out of water meters to unmetered areas. The grant is part of the National Water Security Plan for Cities and Towns. A portion of the grant will help fund Southern Water’s metering of around 65,000 homes in the southern region.

Southern Water’s Manager Project Delivery, Mr Stuart McFadzean, said while he appreciated the support the local community had shown for the scheme, he was not yet in a position to release any new information.

The Chairman of Tasmania's Water and Sewerage Corporations, Mr Geoff Willis, released the first Tasmanian Water and Sewerage Industry Report which shows that important challenges lie ahead in the areas of customer relations, pricing reform, the roll out of meters and delivering a $1 billion capital program over 10 years to bring infrastructure up to the required standard.

Southern Water has reminded communities across Southern Tasmania that it has imposed a temporary ban on the use of water sprinklers for residents until midnight tonight to ensure enough water is available for fighting fires and protecting properties during the current high fire danger period.
The ban will operate in the Brighton, Central Highlands, Clarence, Derwent Valley, Glamorgan Spring Bay, Glenorchy, Hobart, Huon Valley, Kingborough, Southern Midlands and Tasman municipalities.
