Reticulated drinking water
Southern Water delivers drinking water to connected customers in the region. This process begins with sourcing raw water from catchment areas. Raw water is then treated in accordance with water quality guidelines and distributed to storage areas, such as reservoirs and dams. Southern Water distributes the water to customers through a reticulation network. These systems are maintained efficiently and managed in accordance with the Tasmanian Drinking Water Guidelines and Public Health Act.
Wastewater
Wastewater is used water and sewage from a community or industry. Sources include domestic kitchens, bathrooms and laundries and a range of commercial operations. Southern Water is responsible for managing and maintaining the region’s many wastewater assets. Southern Water collects wastewater via sewer networks and direct it to treatment plants. Here, the wastewater is treated so that it is safe to be re-used for irrigation or released back into the environment.
Development services
Under the new regulations, from 1 July 2009 Southern Water is responsible for approving any relevant water and sewerage infrastructure related aspects of Planning, Building and Plumbing Applications in southern Tasmania.
Industrial services
Southern Water provides services to industrial customers, including tradewaste.
Rural services
Off-peak water may be available to irrigators during periods of low urban demand, or when spare capacity is available. Wayside connections may occur where water is directly supplied through Southern Water's main pipelines rather than through a reticulation system. Southern Water also manages re-use schemes for irrigators.
