Swansea Water Project

Welcome to the Swansea water project page

The Swansea Water Project is an $8.5 million project resulting from an agreement between the State Government of Tasmania, Glamorgan Spring Bay Council and Hobart Water to provide Swansea with high quality, potable drinking water.

This project transffered to Southern Water on 1 July 2009

A dedicated project team has been managing delivery of a 400ML storage dam, new pipelines and a treatment plant to treat water to Australian Drinking Water Guideline standards.

This project provides numerous benefits to the Glamorgan Spring Bay municipality, directly benefiting approximately 650 Swansea houses and businesses through removing the boil alert status. This in turn will support tourism and future economic development.

February 2010

We wish to advise that on Thursday 18 February 2010, residents of Swansea may experience fluctuations in water pressure as the new water pipelines are integrated with the existing reticulation system.

The work, to be carried out between 9am and 3pm, includes cutover and testing of new and existing infrastructure.  Both the Noyes St and Cathcart St reservoirs will be affected.

It is not expected that the water supply will be cut off during this time.  However, as a precaution residents may wish to ensure they have adequate supplies of drinking water on hand if required while the work is in progress.

Southern Water apologies for any inconvenience.  If residents have any issues or concerns please call Southern Water on 13MYWATER (13 6992).

Swansea Dam close to commissioning

We are pleased to report that major construction work is now finished onsite in Swansea and the new dam located off Maria Street is close to commissioning.

The dam will hold over 400ML of water sourced from both the Swan and Meredith rivers which will be treated onsite at the new treatment plant before being distributed to households in Swansea.

The commissioning of the dam will take approximately 4-6 weeks and will include; hydraulic testing, water sampling and pump testing.  There will be in interruption to Swansea's Water supply whil the commissioning is in progress.  However if residents experience any water issues or have any concerns they can contact Southern Water on 13MYWATER (13 6992).

December 2009

A very wet winter and spring temporarily slowed down construction onsite. However the dedication and perseverance of the construction personnel has ensured that we will meet our target of having drinkable water flowing into Swansea this summer.

We are pleased to report that erection of the water treatment plant building is now complete. Power has been connected and practical completion for the Plant is scheduled for late January 2010.

Stage One of the electrical upgrade for the Swan River pump station, which supplies water into Swansea is now complete. This has enhanced plant safety and improved electrical processes. Stage 2 upgrade works are scheduled for February 2010 upon completion of the water treatment plant.

In September the four kilometres of new pipes along Maria and Tarleton Streets were successfully commissioned. These pipes connect the existing Swan River pipeline directly to the Cathcart Street Reservoir and the water treatment plant pipelines into the new system.  A side benefit of the commissioning will be the improvement in water pressure throughout Swansea.

Works on the saddle dam above the Meredith River are now almost complete. Practical completion for the larger dam has now been delayed by the wet winter and recent flash flooding.

September 2009

The project team has been very busy onsite in Swansea as civil construction on the major infrastructure items, is now in full swing, apart from a few temporary hold ups due to inclement weather.

We are pleased to report that stage two of the water transfer pipelines including excavating, trenching, laying and testing, is now complete along Maria and Tarlenton Street.  The next stage of piping, involving connecting the dam to the reservoir and water treatment plant, will commence once the dam is completed.

The Water Treatment Plant is a DAF+F Plant (Dissolved Air Flotation + Filtration).  It is the same treatment process as the one in Bicheno. This was assembled in Launceston by Aquagenics Pty Ltd and has arrived onsite in Swansea with building to commence later in September.  This will treat approximately 2ML/day with the ability to treat up to 4ML/day.

In other minor associated works, the tender for the reservoir roof in Maria Street was awarded with works to commence soon.

The Swan River pump station which supplies water into Swansea, will soon undergo an upgrade to improve electrical processes, enhance the safety of the plant and update the existing infrastructure.

Project completion is still on schedule for the Summer of 2009/2010.

March 2009

We are pleased to report that the tenders for the main infrastructure components have been awarded and construction has now started. The Primary contractor for the dam and pipelines has been awarded to Shaw Contracting Pty Ltd.  The contractor for the water treatment plant has been awarded to Aquagenics Pty Ltd.   Tenders for minor associated works including the Swan River Pump upgrade, pump for the Meredith River and the existing Cathcart Street Reservoir roofing are closing in March 2009.  Project completion is due late 2009, or earlier all things going well.

January 2009

We are pleased to report that Hobart Water has received approval for it’s development applications lodged late last year. Outstanding statutory approvals include the Assessment Committee for Dam Construction (ACDC) and the Aboriginal Heritage Permit. Tenders for all major components including the water treatment plant, pipelines and dam are now closed and currently being evaluated by Hobart Water with contracts expected to be finalised by late January.

Community Open Days were held in Orford and Bicheno in November 2008 presenting a valuable time to meet with various community members. More Open Days will be scheduled across the Glamorgan Spring Bay municipality in 2009. Look out for advertising closer to the event time.
